STREET DANCE DEFINITION

Street dance is used to describe dance styles that developed outside of dance studios on the streets, in schoolyards and at nightclubs, for example, breaking, popping and locking.

People who developed these styles did not call themselves "street dancers" or their dancing style "street dance". They were called b-boys,

b-girls, poppers and lockers.

The term street dance came about in the 1980's when studio based choreographers copied the street styles for stage and videos.

Commercial street dance is a strong style with elements of street and sometimes jazz. Dancers on music videos and TV are classed as commercial dancers.

We teach all styles of street dance here at Streets Ahead.
